Below is a statement from BCSD Superintended Dr. Tonia Thomspon regarding the Roosevelt reconstruction bill.

"We were informed that late yesterday Governor Hochul vetoed legislation that would have greatly assisted with the reconstruction of Theodore Roosevelt Elementary School. This bill would have allowed us to access additional state aid that is normally restricted to Small City Schools.

On behalf of the entire Binghamton City School District, I am extremely disappointed to learn of the Governor’s veto. We are awaiting the Governor’s accompanying veto message that will provide details related to her decision and any potential steps forward from the State.

Despite this disappointing news, the district’s plan continues to move forward with this project. Our Capital Committee will now be tasked with identifying next steps to begin a multi-phase approach to renovation of the existing building. I would like to thank the school community, residents of the City of Binghamton, and our State Legislators - Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo and Senator Lea Webb - for their ongoing support of Theodore Roosevelt.

The importance of Roosevelt to the North & East Sides of the City cannot be understated. Despite this setback, this project remains a top priority for the Binghamton City School District."
