Members of the First Ward Senior Center in Binghamton got a taste of the '50's Tuesday during their lunch. Three cast members of Binghamton High School's upcoming production of "Damn Yankees" stopped in to sing a couple of songs from the musical. The story centers on a fan of the hapless Washington Senators baseball team who makes a deal with devil to help his beloved Senators finally overcome the dominant Yankees. A couple years after Joel Smales heard Ithaca College's Steel Band, he bought a steel pan of his own to play along with Binghamton High School's Jazz Ensemble."Everybody loved it," said Smales, a music teacher at the school. "I got some old drums, and from there, it kind of blossomed and took off."
Soon, Smales secured a grant to purchase a few old steel pans for the school, and the Steel Drum Band was formed in 1999. Read the BHS Steel Drum story on Press Connects

Congratulations to all of the BHS students who participated in the Reflections Art Competition sponsored by the PTSA. A ceremony took place Dec. 5 to recognize the winners. Before members of Smash were dismissed from an October rehearsal at East Middle School, they were given homework.  Robert Crissman, the group's director, asked students to dig up anything in their house that could be transformed into a shaker. M&M containers or peanut butter jars could do the trick, he suggested.  This is not unusual for the group, which makes music out of everything from Pringle cans, to metal trash can lids, trash cans, buckets and even kitchen sinks.  Read the whole story on PressConnects.   [...click for more]

Students from Binghamton High School's IB Chinese class learned about Chinese culture and traditions at the Rock Center’s Second Annual Moon Festival Gala in Syracuse. Nya Gibson, Natalie Sheehan, Elise White, and Sienna Merrill joined their teacher Ms. Chen Berry for the Moon Festival, or Mid-Autumn Festival, which is a Chinese gathering for thanksgiving, as friends and family reunite in celebration of the harvest.  [...click for more]

Congratulations to Sophia Klin who was selected to represent Binghamton High School at New York State School Music Association’s (NYSSMA) All-State Conference. The conference will take place in Rochester, N.Y. from Nov. 30 to Dec. 3. The All-State experience began when Klin spent countless hours preparing her NYSSMA Level VI solo. Last spring, over 6,500 sophomores and juniors from across the state of New York prepared for All-State evaluations in the hope of being selected. [...click for more]

Overture Community Band, MacArthur Elementary and Calvin Coolidge Elementary combined bands Sunday afternoon for one large concert at the Binghamton Zoo at Ross Park. The concert brought together beginner level musicians of all ages at the parks amphitheater.Overture is a beginner level concert band designated for adults. Students at Horace Mann Elementary were treated to a puppet show Friday as part of their end of year celebration.The inaugural Mann Jamboree featured a performance by the Catskill Puppet Theater.The group put on a play about the discrimination that immigrants face focusing on a Chinese family and an Irish family during the California gold rush.
