Students Learn Math With Fun and Games
From the colorful mats on the gym floor to the hopping and skipping children; you would never guess that they were learning math. The Binghamton City School District has been trying a new strategy to help children get excited about math.  Watch the video on our YouTube channel 
Dr. Tonia Thompson Named Interim Superintendent of Schools for BCSD
The board of education is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Tonia Thompson as the Interim Superintendent of Schools of the Binghamton City School District for the 2016-2017 school year.“It is with full-support that the Board of Education appointed Dr. Thompson to this position,” Board President David Hawley said. “Tonia is an essential part of the district and has extensive knowledge in curriculum instruction, state education obligations and state assessments, which will help us move many educational initiatives forward.”Dr. Thompson will take a leave of absence from her current position as Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction and Accountability to fill this interim appointment. 
BHS Parade of Champions
The city of Binghamton honored the Class AA state champion Binghamton High School softball team and state champion members of the track and field team Tuesday with a parade of champions.The community showed up in bunches and Mayor Rich David opened the ceremony to honor the student-athletes. Barnes & Noble Summer Reading Triathlon
To help you stay in reading shape all summer long, the Barnes & Noble Summer Reading Triathlon has been designed with activities and challenges that you'll find fun no matter what kind of books you like to read. You can also earn a FREE book. For grades 1-6. Click here for more information. 
BCSD Elementary Band performs at the B-Mets NYSEG Stadium
On June 7th, B-Mets fans at Binghamton’s NYSEG Stadium were treated to the Star Spangled Banner performed by the BCSD Elementary Band. Click here to watch the video. 
BCSD Hosts Workshop on Safety and Discipline
The Binghamton City School District on Monday held a community workshop to discuss school climate and safety within the elementary schools. Invited to the event were community members, stakeholders in the district, parents, educators and administrators.The groups on Monday learned about the code of conduct, emergency procedures and behavior task force within the district for elementary schools.The district hopes that by gathering this information it will be better equipped to form a plan of action for the 2016-2017 school year. Binghamton University Athletes Host Play 60 Event for Students
The Binghamton athletics department hosted a "Play 60" event on campus on Thursday for students of MacArthur Elementary on May 5.  The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee organized the occasion. Members of several athletic teams volunteered for the event, which featured four groups of students from MacArthur Elementary School. Over 60 students worked with Bearcat student-athletes to play games such as kickball and jump-roping and tour BU's campus. Watch the story 
Chief School Officers from Broome and Tioga Take Tour at MacArthur
Chief School Officers from Broome and Tioga County gathered for their monthly meeting at MacArthur Elementary School.  While they were there, they took a tour of the brand new facility.  
BCSD Fifth Graders Chosen as 'Students of the Year'
Seven outstanding kids from Binghamton were honored as ‘Students of the Year’ by the Binghamton Rotary Club. One fifth grader from each of the seven Binghamton elementary schools was chosen as a student who represents outstanding leadership, talent and contribution to their school and community. BCSD Celebrates 10th Annual Rod Serling Day
Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) The 10th Annual Rod Serling Day on Thursday taught local fifth graders all about the Binghamton native.The event took place Thursday morning at the Helen Foley Theatre at Binghamton High School. During the celebration, all fifth grade students in the Binghamton City School District learned about the life of The Twilight Zone creator Rod Serling. Watch the story on WBNG, WIVT, and WICZ 
Community Members Get First Look at MacArthur
The public had the chance to take a closer look inside the newly-finished MacArthur Elementary School in Binghamton. The school was rebuilt from the ground up, after the devastating floods of 2011, which displaced students for more than four years. Students Participate in Poetry Recitation
Students from MacArthur Elementary School participated in a poetry recitation to celebrate National Poetry Month. MacArthur students Olivia Travis and Robert Somers, along with their alternates Samantha Dalmolen and Christopher Somers will represent MacArthur at the Eleanor Henricks Countywide Poetry Recitation for Children on Saturday April 30 at 2 p.m. in the Helen Foley Theatre at BHS.  
BCSD Celebrates National Poetry Month with Celebration
April marks National Poetry Month, a celebration of poetry started in 1996 by the Academy of American Poets.Here in town, there's the Eleanor Hendricks Countywide Poetry Recitation for Children. Now in its 26th year, the recitation will be held April 30 in the Helen Foley Theater at Binghamton High School. Read story on Press Connects

Movie Night Benefits CHOW
Come see "Finding Nemo" at MacArthur Elementary School this Friday at 6 p.m. in the cafeteria. This fun family event will benefit the Community Hunger Outreach Warehouse.  Admission will be a $1 donation to CHOW and/or a non-perishable food item.   
BCSD Librarian Recognized Nationally
For the past quarter-century, Lonna Pierce has led the Eleanor Hendricks Countywide Poetry Recitation for Children, an event that brings together students from 20 area schools in grades one to eight who perform memorized poems in a celebration of the written and spoken word. 
District Art Show Showcases Art Programs at BCSD
The District Art Show took place March 3 and featured student artworks from students in K-12.  The pieces displayed exhibited all of the wonderful art programs that BCSD offers. The Middle School students at West created coloring book pages for visitors to join in and enjoy in the artistic experience. The art show will be on display for the month of March in Binghamton High School.  
Elementary Students Perform in Eastside Band Concert
Fifth grade band students from Roosevelt, Franklin, Coolidge and MacArthur Elementary schools worked with the East Middle School band director Rob Johnson and his middle school band during the day.  
Doug's Fish Fry Fundraiser for After Prom Party Scheduled March 11

Help the senior class raise money for the after prom party by ordering some delicious seafood from Doug’s Fish Fry Friday, March 11 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The fish fry will take place at Hatala Orthodontics at 165 Riverside Drive in Johnson City. Orders can be placed over the phone by calling 607-423-5996 by 4 p.m. All dinners come with French fries and coleslaw and tax is included in all prices.

 
Staff Celebrates Volunteers During Appreciation Luncheon
MacArthur teachers and staff reached out to the volunteers who helped get them ready for the transition to the new building with an appreciation luncheon yesterday. The volunteers consisted of retired teachers and students at SUNY Binghamton. 
Community Celebrates the Chinese New Year
The Chinese Lunar New Year begins Feb. 8, but some Southern Tier residents celebrated early Saturday. The Binghamton City School District, the Confucius Institute of Binghamton University and the Southern Tier Chinese Community Association at East Middle School hosted the celebration at East Middle School. BCSD Librarian Lonna Pierce Named as American Graduate Champion
As a librarian with the Binghamton City School District Lonna Pierce is dedicated to literary education. Not only does she instill a love of reading to students in MacArthur and Thomas Jefferson Elementary Schools, she is also the founder of the Eleanor Henricks County Wide Poetry Recitation for Children. Pierce has also been a long-time volunteer with WSKG’s PBS KIDS Writer’s Contest and was just nominated to receive the distinction of American Graduate Champion.  Watch the story on WBNG and WICZ 
K-2 Students Arrive at New MacArthur Elementary

Wide-eyed Emily Tibbetts, 5, held her older brother's hand Monday morning as she ventured into the new MacArthur Elementary School.Tibbetts said she was most excited to get to her first class before she joined other kindergarten through second grade students in the school's cafeteria. Benjamin Franklin to Offer New Full-Day Free Pre-K

High-risk preschool students now not only have a new pre-kindergarten option, it's a rare full-day program, thanks to a state grant. New Video Showcases Project Lead the Way

Watch our newest video on our BCSD You Tube channel about Project Lead the Way. PLTW is a nationally recognized pre-engineering curriculum which can be integrated at any grade level K-12. While PLTW is widely implemented in many schools nationally at the high school level, BCSD is one of only a handful of districts that implements the curriculum at the elementary level.

 
Students Participate in Global Movement: Hour of Code
Elementary school students in the Binghamton City School District participated in Hour of Code, a global movement reaching tens of millions of students in 180 countries. It’s a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify code and show that anybody can learn the basics. See gallery 
First Day of School at MacArthur
For students in MacArthur Elementary School, today was the day they had been waiting for. It was the first day in their brand new school. For many of them, today was the first time in the building. Principal Maria McIver addressed the students in the morning and told them what an honor it was to be in the new building and reminded them to treat it with respect. The students then made their way to their new classrooms. Walking through the hallways, the teachers acted as tour guides pointing out where everything was and what would be put in at a later date. New MacArthur Opens its Doors for Sneak Peak

At long last; MacArthur students and families get a look at their new home
On Monday, November 23, over 450 MacArthur students and their families attended an open house set up just for them. On November 24 the relocation of grade 3-5 classrooms will begin in earnest with classes for those students set to begin in the new MacArthur building on Monday, November 30. See photo gallery here. 
Author Gives 500 Books to BCSD Third Graders
Nila J. Webster, a well know author of children’s books, wants to ensure that every third grade student in Binghamton will have a chance to hear a magical message of anti-bullying through her book, “The Gift of You/The Gift of Me”. This special gift was made in honor of her mom, Jani Johe Webster, who grew up in Binghamton. Webster's grandmother was also a Binghamton resident for over 70 years. Ms. Webster has been a very active philanthropist and school supporter over the years, having donated thousands of copies of her books to schools all over New York and New England. 
Welcome Home: MacArthur Teachers Tour New School

Teachers from MacArthur Elementary School were welcomed back home on Wednesday night as they took a tour of the brand new building. For almost all of the teachers, this was the first time they had the chance to see the inside of their school. Since the school was flooded in 2011, the teachers have been teaching in two different locations. View gallery.  

 
4th Graders Learn about Native Americans at Roberson

November is Native American Heritage Month, and fourth-grade students from the BCSD are learning about the Native Americans who lived in New York through a program at Roberson Museum. Pat Stacconi, an educator with Roberson said the museum hosts curriculum-aligned programs that support Common Core learning standards. The fourth grade-social studies curriculum includes learning about local history and the Native American Indians of New York State. View gallery.

Almost 300 children and adults came together at the Broome County Library for Jumpstart’s Read for the Record. Read for the Record is a global campaign which generates public support for high-quality learning by mobilizing millions of children and adults to take part in the world’s largest shared reading experience. Elementary students learn about what makes a champion of character during assembly

Students in K-5 from Horace Mann, MacArthur and Thomas Jefferson schools gathered at West Middle School for a motivational media assembly Sept. 15. The assembly called Champions and Stars encouraged, inspired and motivated students and educators to rise up and strive for personal excellence, responsibility and leadership in everyday life.

MacArthur Rising

On the afternoon of August 4, Binghamton City School District Board of Education members had a chance to get a “sneak preview” of the new MacArthur Elementary School. Progress on the new facility has moved along well during the spring/summer months and the building is currently on schedule for a November opening. Visitors toured areas of the structure which are beginning to take on recognizable forms as state-of-the-art classrooms, a “gymatorium”, cafeteria, library media center, common use and performance areas. MacArthur Construction Updates
On April 15, 2013 the residents of the Binghamton city School District overwhelmingly approved, by public referendum vote, the construction of a new facility to replace the Macarthur elementary school which was lost in the 2011 flood.
