Welcome to Ms. Distin's Kindergarten Class Website We are now on a 6 Day Schedule. Here is our specials schedule: Day 1: Music Day 2: Gym Day 3: Art Day 4: Gym Day 5: Music and Library Day 6: Art Please have your child wear sneakers every day. We go outside every day and we want your child to be safe inside and outside! As warmer weather approaches and the weather begins to change, please be sure to dress your child for the weather. We go out every day that it is 20 degrees or higher and not raining. An extra pair of pants and socks might be helpful, too, in case the children get wet or dirty. Thanks! School Policy requires that the children not wear flip flops, spaghetti straps, middriff tops, or sandals without back straps. Thank you for helping us keep your child safe!

In math we begin by identifying, writing, and representing numbers 1-5. Our goal is to get to 100 (and beyond!) We are also learning about the calendar, sorting, and the concepts of same/different, more/less/greater/fewer. In the next topic we learn about position words: left/right, over/under/on, inside/outside, and top/middle/ bottom. We also will be talking about numbers up to 20. We will learn to use a ten frame, counting, representing, and comparing. In Topic 6 we talk about numbers to 100! We will count by 2's to 20, and 5's, and 10's to 100. In Topic 7 we begin learning about simple addition. In Topic 8 we begin learning about simple subtraction. In Topic 12 we learn about measurement. Some of the children need some practice at home writing their first and last names. The first letter should be upper case and the rest of the letters should be lower case. Thanks. Also, please help your child learn his/her full name(including middle name), phone number, address, and birthday. 100 Book Challenge- Please try and read with your child every day! The minimum goal for the year is 400 books read! |
 May is another busy month as we prepare to assess the children for one final time in preparation for the end of the school year. Please keep reading 100 Book Challenge books with your children. Our minimum goal is 400 books. On May 1st we had a presentation about King Arthur performed by an outside group. We had a surprise with a concert from Johnny Only and the ice cream truck here to celebrate our student learning on May 6th. All students and staff received a free ice cream cone compliments of the PTA. We will also have The Magic Trunk Show present an anti-bullying program to us on May 10th. We have a long weekend in observance of Memorial Day from May 24th-27th. Kindergarten goes to The Discovery Center on May 30th from 12:00 pm -2:00 p.m. Whew! |
 April is an exciting month with spring starting to finally show up! Hopefully, we will be able to get out most days. Parent/Teacher Conferences are scheduled for 1 day, April 10th. If you would like to meet with me, please let me know. The children are dismissed at 10:55 a.m. that day with conferences beginning at 12:15 p.m. We will only have about 10 weeks until summer vacation so it is important to push on and read as many 100 Book Challenge books as possible. Remember our minimum goal is 400 books. Some children have already met that goal! |
 March is an odd month due to the changing weather. We continue to go outside any day that the temperature is 20 degrees and above. Please dress your child for the weather. We celebrated Dr. Seuss' birthday on March 2nd. We had a special treat when Mr. Larry Coppola( aka The Cat in the Hat) came and read to Kindergarten and 1st grade on March 4th. Superintendent's Day is March 15th and there is no school. On Tuesday, March 19th we begin using a special computer program 5 out of 6 days for 40 minutes designed to enhance reading skills. Spring Break begins March 29th-April 7th. Parent/Teacher Conferences are scheduled for 1 day only on April 10th. If you wuld like to meet with me, please let me know.  February is another busy month in Kindergarten. Report cards go home early in the month. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the report cards, please contact me. I am available to meet most days after school. If we don't have any snow days between now and then, our 100th day of school will be February 19th. We will celebrate that day by asking the children to each bring in a collection of 100 things. The collection ideas can be almost anything that the children can carry and is not valuable. 100 pennies, 100 toothpicks, 100 pieces of candy, 100 pieces of paper, 100 pieces of pasta, 100 pieces of cereal, 100 stickers, etc. On February 14th, we will have our Valentine's Day Party at 2:00 p.m. We will have an ice cream sundae party. If you would like to donate something for our party, please contact Cara Fraser at 760-0350. We need ice cream, bowls, spoons, napkins, whipped cream, sprinkles, gummi bears, chocolate syrup, a drink, cups, and anything else you can think of! Thank you. In terms of valentines, I sent home a sheet with all of the children's first names. PLEASE, if your child brings any valentines to school, have your child bring one for everyone. On February 25th the Dirtmeister, a science based show, will provide a school-wide presentation. |
 January is another busy month with assessments coming up. The children will be administered the middle of the year assessments in both ELA and math as well as DIBELS in reading. In terms of 100 Book Challenge,the children should have read a minimum of 200 books by now to be on target for the end of year's minimum goal of 400 books read. Please keep reading with your child to exceed that goal! We will be learning about Martin Luther King, Jr., animals in winter, and measurement and data. There is no school on January 21st in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday. Report cards will go home in the children's backpacks in early February. |
 December promises to be an exciting month with all of the holidays. We will be making "gingerbread houses" and hope that you will be able to donate an item for our "houses" such as 1 can of whipped white frosting, 1 box of plain graham crackers, 1 bag of M & Ms, 1 bag of Skittles, 1 bag of chocolate covered raisins, 1 bag of gimmies, etc. No hard candy, please. Thank you! On December 20th, all Kindergaraten classes will be singing holiday songs at Morning Program beginning at 7:50 a.m. Please come and hear us sing! |
 November promises to be another busy month. As the weather continues to get colder, please dress your child appropriately to go outside after lunch. There is no school on Monday, November 12th, in observance of Veterans' Day. Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held on the afternoons of November 19th and 27th beginning at 12:15. The children will be dismissed at 10:55 a.m. Please sign up to meet and discuss your child's progress! Forms went home October 24th. Please contact me if you need another form. Thanksgiving Break begins on Wednesday, November 21st and school resumes on Monday, November 26th. Re-takes for pictures will occur on November 29th, so you will have your pictures back before then.  October usually brings changes in the weather so please dress your child accordingly. As part of our PBIS Program (Positive Behavior Intervention Strategies) the "Superheroes" will be introduced at Morning Program on Wednesday, October 3rd. Please join us if your schedule allows! There will be an Early Dismissal Drill on Thursday, October 4th. The children will be released 10 minutes early at 2:30 p.m. There is no school on Friday, October 5th (Superintendent's Conference Day) or Monday, October 8th(Columbus Day). Firefighter Patrick Giblin from the Binghamton Fire Department is scheduled to visit all Kindergarten classes on Thursday, October 11th to discuss fire prevention. We will walk to the Fire Station (Engine 1) on Friday, October 12th at 1:00 p.m. Picture Day is scheduled for 8:55 on Thursday, October 18th. The Halloween Parade and Party is scheduled for Wednesday, October 31st. The parade starts at 1:30 with parties to follow. Please consider donating something to our party. The school rule is that the costumes may not include weapons of any kind nor any kind of mask. Face paint is fine. Please read with your child his/her 100 Book Challenge. We definitely have a busy month! |
September is always a busy month as the children and I are getting to know one another and establishing our routine. It is an early day as school starts at 7:50 a.m. with breakfast beginning at 7:15 a.m. School ends at 2:40 p.m. On Monday, September 10, we will join the rest of the children at Morning Program at 7:50. We have reserved for us the first 3 rows on the left hand side in front of the stage. Feel free to join us if you like. Morning Program lasts no more than 10 minutes. For the first 4-6 weeks the children may come home exhausted as they are adjusting to the school day. However, usually by Halloween they are fine. On the first day you should have received paperwork sharing some important information as well as papers that you need to return regarding emergency cards, regular dismissal, emergency dismissal, field trip permission, photo permission, and clinic enrollment. Please return them to me as soon as possible. Thanks!
