100 Book Challenge, the First Grade Way

In 1st grade, we write in our reading logs for every 15 minutes read, not  for every book. Your child should be able to read for 15 minutes at the beginning of the year and move to 30 or 45 minutes of reading by the end of the school year.

In 1st grade, we are practicing fluency as well as comprehension. So when your child is reading, it should be fun, fast and easy. The next level will be achieved when your child has mastered the skills card for that level. 100 Book Challenge time should be about fluent reading, not decoding. It is also about understanding what we just read. Does it make sense? If not, go back and re-read it.

Our goal is the BB level by the end of the year. Reading every night with your child will help to keep them on the right track. Don't make it like work. . .Make it fun!

Happy Reading!!
