Our DistrictDistrict Policies

Attendance
Regular and prompt attendance is expected of all BCSD students. A note from the parent or guardian is needed to explain any student absence. If a note is not received within a reasonable period of time, the absence will be considered illegal. Illegal absences result in a loss of instruction for the child and a loss of state aid for the district. Illegal absences and repeated tardiness are entered into the student's permanent record.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Discipline
The Board of Education believes that each student should be treated as a person who is responsible for his/her behavior. The district's Discipline Policy recognizes the need for orderly conduct in the schools and will guide students with sensible rules, focusing on safety and respect for the rights and property of others. Students who cannot accept this responsibility and who violate school rules will be required to accept the penalties and more regulated supervision.

Disciplinary action, when necessary, will be firm, fair, progressive and consistent in order to be most effective in changing behavior.

The complete Discipline Policy, which outlines the rules in detail, will appear in the fall issue of the Heritage newsletter. A copy of this policy is also on file in each school and is available for review by any individual.

Registration
Students entering Binghamton City schools for the first time must register in the school they will attend. If you are unsure what school your child will attend, contact the district Attendance Office at 762-8114.  Kindergarten students must be five years old on or before Dec. 1, 2007 to register for the 2007-2008 school year. For more information call 762-8114.

Visitors to Our Schools
Visitors are welcome at any time during school hours. To ensure the safety of our children, all visitors are required to first report to the Main Office. If you wish to see a particular individual, please contact the school in advance to arrange an appointment. Teachers and other personnel must conform to set work schedules and can only meet during free periods.

Access to Records
Parents and guardians have a right to see their child's records and to discuss those records with appropriate school personnel. Discrepancies and inaccuracies can be appealed or rebutted, pursuant to school policy. Students are not allowed access to their records until their 18th birthday. The general public is not allowed access to individual student records.
