Our Mission
In the Binghamton schools, we understand the strong connection between good health and success in learning.  Working together with parents, we strive to provide services, information and resources to help maintain and enhance the health and wellness of every student.  Please review the information on this webpage regarding our health programs and policies.  If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact Joyce DeRitis, our Consultant for Health Programs, at 762-8145, or contact the school nurse/teacher at any of our school buildings.

Medical Examination Requirements
A physical examination is required by law for every new student entering the district.
BCSD also mandates physicals for students entering grades:
Kindergarten, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 10th, students receiving special education services, and any time as deemed necessary by the school district.
Parents are encouraged to have physicals done by their own health care providers, but if the Physical Exam form (H-11) is not turned in by Oct. 1st of the year the physical is required, a physical will be scheduled with the school physician sometime during the school year.

Athletic Physicals
Students participating in interscholastic athletics must undergo a sports physical.  This is given in addition to any required school physical and must be conducted by the school physician.  For more information on dates and times of physicals, call the school Health Office. Parents are required to submit an updated medical history and athletic consent card allowing their child to participate in sports.  A new card must be completed for each sport.  Cards are sent home with students and are also available in each school Health Office.

Physical Education Participation
State Education Law requires all students to participate in physical education.  Students who are unable to fully participate in P.E. programs should have a form (available through the link below) completed by their physician and we will modify the program as needed.

Emergency Care
School personnel, under the direction of a school nurse/teacher or registered nurse, are responsible for first-aid care of students who are injured or become ill while in school.  Accidents of any kind should be reported promptly to the school Health Office.  Every student is required to have an Emergency Card on file at the school, providing alternate contact information in the event that the parent/guardian cannot be reached in an emergency.  Emergency cards are provided to students at the beginning of the school year, and are also available through the link below.  Please be sure that the contact information on the Emergency Card is correct and updated.

Special Health Care Needs
Please inform the school of any special health care needs or concerns regarding your child.  All BCSD school Health Offices have qualified registered professional nurses on staff who are experienced in dealing with many acute and chronic illnesses.  If your child will be absent for an extended period due to medical reasons, a written statement from the primary healthcare provider will be required.  The district will verify this information and will work with parents to provide appropriate homebound instruction.
