Elections / Vacancies
The Board of Education, a branch of state government, is elected locally by the citizens of the Binghamton City School District. Every school district has its own school board. The Board’s primary responsibilities are: to set local policy, to levy property taxes to help meet the district budget, and to hire a Superintendent to run the schools in the district.
In Binghamton, the Board of Education has seven members who are elected to five-year terms and positions are 'at large'.
Elections: School Board elections are held annually on the third Tuesday in May. In Binghamton, one or two members stand for election in any given year.
Vacancies: If a vacancy occurs on the Board between elections, per Education Law, the Board may choose to call for a special election, leave the position vacant or appoint a qualified person to fill the vacancy until the next annual election.
If a vacancy is filled by election, the number of votes determines who receives the balance of the unexpired term.
