Strategies for Tactile Learners
Compiled by Jennifer Gardner & Lisa Schlegel
Wikki Stix are strings covered in wax and stick to textbook or workbook pages. Students can use them to creatively underline, circle, or highlight key information. This PDF provides three example standards links for using Wikki Stix in Reading, Math, and Social Studies.
This strategy can be used to promote independent thinking and encourage forming opinions while resisting peer influence on a variety of topics. A reproducible meter is also included.
Pattern Towers give students a concrete fun way to learn. Examples include word families, skip counting, rhyming words.
This strategy can be used to reduce off-task behavior, disruption, or conflict by using strips of fabric textures to provide extra tactile stimulation.
This strategy helps tactile learners maintain focus during lessons that address other learning styles in an appropriate manner. A "Fiddle-Stuff Basket" provides students with positive tactile stimulus during auditory or visual activities providing an outlet for excess energy using safe/acceptable objects..
