four students and teacher stand smiling BHS Students Learn about Chinese Culture During Moon Festival
Students from Binghamton High School's IB Chinese class learned about Chinese culture and traditions at the Rock Center’s Second Annual Moon Festival Gala in Syracuse. Nya Gibson, Natalie Sheehan, Elise White, and Sienna Merrill joined their teacher Ms. Chen Berry for the Moon Festival, or Mid-Autumn Festival, which is a Chinese gathering for thanksgiving, as friends and family reunite in celebration of the harvest.

Congratulations to Binghamton High School student Ella Egan. Egan has been named a 'Commended Student' in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program. She is one of approximately, 34,000 students throughout the nation who are being recognized for their exceptional promise. To be chosen for this honor, she had to place among the top 50,000 scores of more than 1.6 million students by taking the preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.  
Pre-K openings Spots Still Available for FREE Half-Day Pre-K
There are still openings available for half-day Pre-K for 4 year olds who will be 4 years old by Dec. 1.  There are openings at West, Franklin, MacArthur and BHS. Transportation is not provided, but bust passes may be available to families who need them to get studetns to and from school.  For more information call and availablity please call 762-8197.  
TK Openings available Transitional Kindergarten Openings Still Available
Transitional Kindergarten or TK openings are still available. TK serves as a bridge between preschool and kindergarten, functioning to provide students with time to develop fundamental skills needed for success. Children must be five years old by Dec. 1. The first day in a new school can be overwhelming; however, to help eliminate some of those first day concerns, we would like to invite students to attend the annual BHS 9th Grade Orientation. This year 9th Grade Orientation will be held on Aug. 24 and 25. Last Names- A-K will attend on Thursday, Aug. 24 from 9 a.m. until noon. Last Names- L-Z will attend on Friday,  Aug. 25 from 9 a.m. until noon.

Three New Administrators Approved at BOE Meeting image Three New Administrators Approved at BOE Meeting
At last night's board of education meeting three new administrators were added to the district. Velvet Tanner was named the new director of special services. Tanner has served in the district in various capacities over the past 15 years. She has been a special educator and most recently served as the collaborative coach for Thomas Jefferson. She will begin her new role on Oct. 26. Shelly Richards was named the new assistant principal at MacArthur and Roosevelt Elementary Schools.

The Binghamton City School District’s Pre-K program is FREE and open to all children who are 4 by Dec. 1 and live in the City of Binghamton. Half day openings are currently available at Binghamton High School (BHS Pre-K) and MacArthur Elementary Pre-K. There are also half day openings at the Jewish Community Center and Campus Preschool at Binghamton University. Families can register at 98 Oak St in Binghamton or call (607) 762-8197 for more information.

Today’s PTA is your opportunity, as a parent or caregiver, to make a difference in the lives of children.
